Functions of the liver (cont)

2. Synthesis

Simple building blocks are combined to manufacture (synthesize) complex substances

The liver takes simple building blocks and combines them into larger units. For example, the liver manufactures most of the proteins found in the blood. One protein, called albumin, combines with other substances and carries them to wherever they are needed in the body. Proteins necessary for prevention of bleeding are also manufactured in the liver.
