Most infections are due to injection drug use. Intravenous drug use accounts for about two thirds of all cases of hepatitis C. People who have injected drugs, even once, are at highest risk for hepatitis C. In fact, the risk of getting HCV through IV drug use is much higher than the risk of getting HIV--about 60% to 80% of IV drug users are infected with the hepatitis C virus. Only 30% of IV users are infected with HIV.
