Clinical Efficacy of INTRON® A (Interferon alfa-2b, recombinant) for Injection

The goal of treatment for viral hepatitis is to eradicate the virus early in the course of the disease in order to prevent progression to end-stage liver disease.

As the only indicated monotherapy for both chronic hepatitis B and C, interferon alfa-2b monotherapy can provide:

  • Long-term sustained improvement in liver function
  • Reduction of viral load
  • Reduction of inflammation

In controlled trials with HCV patients, INTRON® A:

  • Reduced ALT levels to normal or significantly reduced ALT levels from baseline in 24 percent of patients receiving 18 to 24 months of therapy.
  • Was associated with significant histological improvement in 58 percent of responding patients with extended therapy.

Data show that INTRON A therapy for up to 24 months may double its efficacy, as shown in the following graph.

ALT Response Rate vs. Duration of Therapy in Chronic Hepatitis C Patients

*A sustained response was defined as a complete response at the end of the treatment period, with sustained normal ALT values lasting at least 6 months following discontinuation of therapy.
