Side Effects of INTRON® A

Side effects associated with INTRON® A can be flu-like symptoms, which are usually the worst during the first few weeks of treatment and tend to lessen over time. So don't give up—it does get better!

Other side effects you may experience include fatigue, fever, muscle pains, general body aches, chills, and nausea. You may also find that food tastes different or that you have a metallic taste in your mouth. Mild hair thinning and dry, itchy skin can also occur. Some of the side effects are similar to the symptoms of hepatitis, so you may use some of the same approaches to handle these problems whenever they arise. (See the section, Managing Your Illness.)

Some people have no side effects, and most others feel well enough to go to work and even travel during INTRON A therapy. If you experience side effects, report them to your doctor. He or she can suggest ways to handle them, such as this simple A-through-F approach:

  • Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can prevent or relieve fever and headache.
  • Bedtime or early evening administration of INTRON A therapy may allow you to sleep through the flu-like symptoms.
  • Conserve your energy and get plenty of rest.
  • Drink plenty of fluids before and during therapy.
  • Eat balanced meals with an adequate number of calories.
  • Focus on the positive!

Remember that it is important to keep taking INTRON® A exactly as your doctor has prescribed it so you will receive the greatest possible benefit from the medicine.
