Administering with Syringe and Vial

The traditional syringe and vial also allows the medication to enter your bloodstream directly, and has been used successfully by many PEG-INTRON® (Peginterferon alfa-2b) Powder for Injection patients. However, the disadvantages of using syringes (even pre-filled syringes) includes needing to prime the glass syringe to remove air bubbles from the solution, and then manually pushing the syringe's plunger to the appropriate line marked on the body of the syringe, taking care not to go past the line and squirting out too much of the solution before injecting.

Before deciding on this method of administering your medication, ask your doctor about using the PEG-INTRON REDIPEN®, and together, determine which method of treatment is right for you. You may want to watch an instructional video on the PEG-INTRON REDIPEN®. *Please note that this link will direct you to a page outside of the Be In Charge website.

Traditional Syringe or REDIPEN®? Administering medication with the traditional syringe and vial involves preparing the solution, such as assembling supplies, washing your hands, filling the syringe to mix the medication in the vial and waiting for air bubbles to dissipate, filling a second syringe with the mixture, injecting the medication, and then disposing of the syringe and needle. All of the supplies you will need are included in the PEG-INTRON package. You may want to watch other patients describe their experiences with administering the treatment .

Your health care provider will show you how to prepare and measure your dose, and how to inject yourself before beginning treatment.
