This section of The Be In Charge® Program Web site is for health care providers who are looking for information on hepatitis C and treatment designed to help patients with the disease.

What is PEG-INTRON® (Peginterferon alfa-2b) Powder for Injection? PEG-INTRON® is a manufactured pegylated form of interferon, a protein made naturally by the body to boost immunity and regulate other cell functions. Pegylation is a process that attaches a substance called polyethylene glycol (PEG) to a protein in order to extend its activity. Attaching PEG to the interferon molecule allows it to stay in the body longer, which can prolong its treatment effects. This allows for once-weekly dosing, compared to dosing three times a week with standard interferon.

PEG-INTRON® can be used alone (monotherapy) or in combination with an antiviral drug called REBETOL® (Ribavirin, USP) Capsules (PEG-INTRON/REBETOL combination therapy) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.
